Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mother. Fearing stress, her parents didn't want to see performing before she turned age 18. Perry acknowledged that she was not at ease in the stage during high school, but started performing as a means to meet new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry began her career as an actress in New York after graduation, getting small roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California and find work as a stage actress. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013 The show was directed by Eugene O'Neill. Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was a part of nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's drama The Family. Perry was a regular character in the ABC political drama Scandal that starred her dad. She played the role of an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. Despite her family link to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
